Calling Richard Gere and other deep-pocketed Buddhists, Sotheby’s has a sale for you. The Arts of Buddha sale on September 21 in New York offers a gorgeous sampling of Buddhist art stretching back centuries.
What is expected to be the top lot at the auction is the gilt copper maitreya which is inset with silver and semiprecious stones. The less than two foot statue which dates back from 13th Century Tibet is estimated to sell for $3.5 million to $4.5 million.
