No mountain is better named than Mammoth. When you stand at the base lodge and scan the mountain, you can’t even see a quarter of the ski terrain. The encircling ridge, all above treeline, promises dramatic skiing, but what you can’t see is even better. Lower peaks such as Lincoln Mountain, Gold Hill and Hemlock Ridge, all with groomed swaths and moguled canyons, stretch 6.5 miles in width. Mammoth is one of the nation’s largest winter resorts in size, and at times it’s the nation’s busiest, with more than 14,000 skiers and riders swooping over its slopes on an average weekend. Mammoth’s ski season (November - April) is one of the longest in the United States.

Mammoth Mountain is proud to have the most ride able terrain of any resort in the country right now! Five lifts were opened this Monday: Stump Alley Express, Broadway Express, Face Lift Express, Discovery Chair and the Upper Panorama Gondola. Main Park, Forest Trail Park and Disco Park are all open featuring a wide variety of rails, boxes, jumps, rollers and other features. Lifts are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily servicing a base of 12-48 inches of natural and manmade snow. Price $79 for an adult for a full day; $59 for 13-to-18-year-olds; $40 for seniors and children 7 to 12.

Giancarlo De Astis is a Los Angeles based designer who turns all kinds of aircraft parts from retired planes into industrial, retro-chic and unique luxury furniture. He gets the aeronautical leftovers from junkyards and plane graveyards in Arizona, and fashions desks, tables, chairs, credenzas, cabinets, lamps and other furnishings out of flaps, turbines, canopies and various odds-and-ends. Some of his most amazing creations are the Latro Primo desk, the Lo Squalo club chair, and the Sole conference table.

Wings become desks ($8,900), and cockpits turn into chairs ($12,000). The Latro Primo ($5,500- $8,900) is made from the rear stabilizer of a Beechcraft 18/C-45, the Lo Squalo club chair ($5,000- $8,500) is made from the air cooling engine scoop of a DC6/7, the II Sole conference table ($10,000) has been inducted in The Smithsonian Institute’s National Air Space Museum and is made from the first stage of a Pratt & Whitney JT8D jet engine case fan.
