Macallan Scotch is picked up for $54,000

At 81 years of age, nothing else but only a bottle of Scotch can demand a sum of $54,000. This matured and pricey spirit was distilled at Macallan in Scotland in 1926, bottled in 1986 and rebottled in 2002. Estimated at a sum of $20,000 to $30,000, and being sold at almost its double, the identity of the buyer is not revealed. It was sold at New York’s first liquor auction since Prohibition at Christie’s sale of wines and spirits on Saturday. What I cannot understand is that even if the Prohibition lasted from 1920 to 1933 only, why the New York State didn’t allow auctions of spirits until this year?

The 100-lot auction sold a total of $304,800 worth of rare wine and liquor. The top lot was a collection of 729 bottles of whisky, which went for $102,000. Thumbs up to a hiccupping Christmas this year in New York! Christie’s says it sold a decades-old bottle of scotch for $54,000, the most expensive bottle of scotch the auction house has ever sold in the first first spirts auction in New York since Prohibition..The 1926 Macallan was bottled in 1986 after spending sixty years in a wood barrel. The bottle - expected to fetch between 20,000 and $30,000 - was bought by a New York private collector. The auction of fine and rare whiskies, cognac, armagnac, calvados and Chartreuse totalled more than $300,000.
