At Christie’s last week, a Philadelphia tea table in a remarkable state of preservation sold for $6.7 million, three times the expected price and a record for Philadelphia furniture sold at auction. Experts say the table, known as the “Fisher-Fox Tea Table,” is worth every penny.
The Fisher-Fox Tea Table with its elaborate surface embellishment in a Rococo style and top edge carved in a pie-crust pattern represents the highest level of colonial American craftsmanship. Pie-crust tables, carved with a raised rim in a series of curves that resemble the outside rim of a pastry crust, were the ultimate challenge for the colonial craftsman and demanded extreme care to achieve precisely spaced scalloping on the rim.
