Marc Jacobs treated a celebrity-packed audience to an eclectic vision of ‘the American Dream’ in a shimmering jewel-box of a collection at the New York State Armoury. Jacobs’ collection, staged on a dazzling, mirrored landscape to George Gershwin’s dramatic ‘Rhapsody in Blue’, was a whistle-stop, round-the-world tour in 53 stunning designs, each one more elaborately conceived than the last. The kaleidoscopic references blended hints of Suzie Wong, Carmen Miranda, and Mary Poppins with a dash of Asian spice, a suggestion of tight-waisted, 1940s secretary style and the hectic dash and colour of the Jazz Age.
Leading the A-list contingent were Victoria Beckham, showing off a new, short ‘elfin’ hair-cut and wearing a strapless, corset-dress from her first luxe ready-to-wear collection, and Jennifer Lopez in a tight, white ‘Pigalle’ hourglass-dress by Roland Mouret, one of Posh’s fashion mentors. Jacobs, undoubtedly America’s best-known and most influential designer (he is also creative director of the French label, Louis Vuitton), is the one all the stores look to, to set the style of the season; with this collection he played an absolute blinder.
