Qatar is the new Dubai. If the recent art activities in its capital city Doha are any indication, then it is quite possible. After the high-profile Qatari Diar Art Symposium, the fairly new but busy Waqif Art Center has unveiled its latest exhibition titled Treasures of Islamic Art that will run till October 5, 2008.

Waqif Art Center, is Doha’s Bastakiya where even Dubai-based art gallery The Third Line opened a second gallery. The Arabic architecture of the center inspired by wind-towers, arches and central courtyards houses is an attraction in itself. The place is buzzing with activity and besides art galleries also houses coffee shops, bookshops and retail outlets that will appeal to the artsy crowd.

If the high-priced 100 million diamond encrusted-platinum skull by Damien Hirst is horrifying expensive for your pockets then check out slightly lesser priced Swarovski Dead or Alive skulls. Ah, but if you are starving for piece of artwork by celebrated Damien Hirst only, then try your luck at his latest creation estimated at about $24 million.

Christened as the “The Golden Calf,” it is the first time that a living artist has put a collection of brand new work straight on to the open market to grab it. Coming to the bejeweled calf, the artist has dared to submerge a bull in formaldehyde. And to boost its luxury quotient, he has crowned its head by a solid-gold disc while the hooves and horns are cast in 18-karat gold. This 2.15 meter bull sculpture sits on a marble base, is encased in a gold-plated box. Watch out for it at Sotheby’s sale over two days in September this year.

If your flair for reading extends beyond the ordinary, then you must be looking at luxury publishing that is making waves these days. Forget diamond encrusted books, ‘Michelangelo: La Dotta Mano’ (Michelangelo: The Wise Hand), a volume of photographs of the Renaissance master’s sculptures is the ultimate coffee table book on stands this year. The book priced at a whopping sum $155,000 comes with a 500 year warranty. So, what’s special about this book? Expert artisans from different fields have worked to create a lavish book that is an ‘art by itself’. While the photographs are printed on high quality paper handmade exclusively for the project, the black marble cover is a scale reproduction of the “Madonna della Scala” (“Madonna of the Steps”), a bas-relief of the Virgin and Child sculptured by Michelangelo. The 46.2 pound book was carried by two attendants when Gruppo FMR made a gala presentation of the book in a spectacular event.

Hurry up and place your order if you want to revel in the luxury of owning this opulent book since it is a limited edition of 99 only and be ready to wait for six months before you lay your hands on it. It’s alright to beg, borrow or steal as long as you really cannot afford to own a book but in this case going for a steal might as well be a good idea!

We have covered various paintings, antiques, statues at international auction houses Sotheby’s and Christie’s. And lately here comes a mandatory update to my list of paintings sold at Christie’s. A Gundam painting by Japanese artist Tenmyouya Hisashi lately fetched $600,000 (HK$4.8 million) at Hong Kong based Christie’s auction house. The painting “RX-78-2 Kabuki-mono 2005 Version” reflects a perfect blend of traditionalism with modernism.

Hisashi states: Japan is known for numerous “Gundam-Otaku’s,” and their admiration of Gundam is profound. Hence, he didn’t wish to alter the image of Gundam. By shifting Gundam’s “mobile suit” to tattoos, he has offered a custom-built model and its setting against the background of gold leaf from customary Japanese painting accentuates Gundam’s samurai genesis.

The world’s most expensive guitar picks are not crafted of gold or platinum, but of Gibeon meteorite. Yep, said to be around 4 billion years old, the Gibeon meteorites were found in Namibia back in 1836.

While the sale & export of these precious meteorites was banned, pieces are still found on the market today, such as these beautiful guitar picks that have been made of the same Gibeon meteorite. Notice the fascinating Widmanstatten lines that indicate their freezing journey through space. Price: $4,674.

Imari porcelain is one of the most striking styles of Japanese porcelain. The style originated circa 1616 in the city of Arita and the porcelain ware was distributed to Japanese locations through the northern Kyushu port of Imari. The traditional color palette for Imari porcelain is very vivid with an underglaze of cobalt blue, and overglaze of iron red and details in gold paint. Sometimes green and yellow polychrome enamel colors were also used as accents. The rich ornamental look of Imari porcelain is reminiscent of the brocading of Japanese textiles.

Next month, Flying Cranes Antiques (located in galleries 55, 56 and 58 in The Manhattan Art and Antiques Center, 1050 Second Avenue at 55th St - NY, NY 10022), will feature a display of Japanese Imari porcelains. Exhibited for sale will be rare forms executed in the rich palette characteristic of the ware. The Flying Cranes Antiques Imari porcelain collection includes various forms: bottle shapes, vases, covered jars, foliate plates dating circa 1850-1880. The cost range for the exhibition is in the $800 to $15,000 with many pieces in the $1,000-2,500 range.
